Kicking Game

Directions:  Answer each question as necessary.  For each play, give the correct ruling.  If it involves a penalty, identify the penalty and its administration. Answers are at the bottom of the page.

1. During a kickoff while the kick is in flight, R1 blocks K2 below the
waist at mid-field.  The kick is recovered by R2 on his own 30 and he is downed at his own 35.

2. R1 muffs a free kick on his own 4 yard line.  The ball goes into R's
endzone and is recovered by K2.

3. K1's kickoff goes out of bounds untouched by R at the R19.

4. K's onside kick (from their own 40) is in flight and muffed by K1 at his own 48.  The ball is then recovered by K2 on R's 49.  R2 commits a personal foul after the play is over by punching K3.

5. K1 punts the ball on a kickoff and the ball is returned by R1 to his own 25.

6. R1 signals for a fair catch on his own 35 during a punt.  K2 contacts R1 prior to the punt arriving and R1 muffs the ball.  It is recovered by K on R's 20.

7. R1 muffs a punt on his own 30.  While the ball is loose R2 bats the ball on R's 25.  The ball goes out of bounds on R's 20.

8. R1 signals a fair catch on his 20.  R2 catches the ball on his own 18 and is tackled by K1.

9. K1's punt is blocked by R1 and the ball reverts into K's endzone where is it muffed by R and goes out of bounds.

10. On 4th and 10 from the K15, K1's punt is blocked by R1 and while loose on K's 3 yard line is kicked out of the endzone by K3.

ANSWERS  

1. If accepted, illegal block below the waist on R, 15 yard penalty from the previous spot and re-kick. The foul took place during a kickoff in flight.  There cannot be post scrimmage kick enforcement on a free kick.

2. Touchback.  The kick was dead when the ball crossed the plane of the goal line without any team in possession.

3. Illegal procedure, free kick out of bounds on K.  Three options:  5 yard and re-kick, R can have the ball 25 yards from the kick (generally the 35), or the results of the play (in this case, R would get the ball on 19).  If the ball is placed on the 35 or the 19, make sure it is on the hash mark closest to where the ball went out of bounds.

4. If accepted, kick catching interference on K for touching a free kick in flight, 15 yards and rekick. Another option is also, first touching on K at the 48.  If both penalties are accepted, rekick from the 40, and R2 is ejected regardless of penalty acceptance.

5. Dead ball foul, free kick infraction on K.  5 yards and rekick.

6. Kick catching interference, 3 options:  15 yards from the previous spot and replay the down, take an awarded fair catch at the spot of the foul, or decline the penalty (in this case, K's ball on the 20).

7. Illegal bat on R.  Under PSK, penalize R ½ the distance to the goal from the 20.  1st and 10 for R at the 10.

8. No foul.  R2 did not signal the fair catch.  The ball is dead when R2 secured possession.

9. Safety.  The kick is the force that sent the ball from the field of play into the endzone.

10. Illegal kick on K.  If accepted, ½ the distance to the goal from the spot of the foul and replay 4th down from the 1.5 yard line.  If declined, the results of the play is a safety.
